Worthless and Weak

You're all worthless and weak!

Well, for the first time ever, I voted in a Hall of Merit election. This is my ballot. You've probably never heard of any of them, maybe you can use them the next time you play celeberty or something. Anyway, here is my 15 man ballot. enjoy...

The first three are all people who I think are special, but with caveats.

1. Pud Galvin
2. Charlie Bennet
3. Bid McPhee

First, Pud threw a lot of pitches. A lot. But And won a lot of games. But, because its 19th century, its really hard to pin down exactly how good he was. ERA+ doesn't like him. But his .92 warp3 pennants added leads all canidates. If he played on a better team, he'd probably be in already. Bennet didn't play every game, but played very very good defense in an era when defense was important, at a position where defense was more important than it is today. Somebody said that McPhee was the best defensive player of the 19th century (as compared to other players of his position). If 2nd base had the same relative importance that it does today, he would be 1st or second.

The difference between Pud and Bid is very small, I switched them back and forth for a while, and they could easily be switched around next year should I read a convincing argument on person's behalf.

4. Hugh Duffy. Win shares are Hugh Duffy's friend. Since I like win shares, Duffy gets the next place, until I'm convinced otherwise.
5. Ezra Sutton. An all around good player.
6. Joe Start. He was probably great. But definately good beats probably great, in my book. There are still too many questions for me to rank him any higher.
7. Harry Stovey. Best outfielder on the ballot not named Hugh Duffy. Again, win shares likes him. warp3 Pennants added don't hate him, he hit well, played good defense. All of which lead me put him slightly higher than all the outfielders below him.
8. Sam Thompson. His .81 Pennants (in Warp3) added look awfully good, but its only .6 in win shares.
9. Cal McVey. Great hitter, great player. I feel really bad putting him this low, but I can't see who I would replace him with.
10. Hughie Jennings. I think there are two questions we are measuring when we ask how great a player was. First, is what they did. Second, is what they were, (or how good they could have been). For instance, even if Yastrzemski was still playing today, I still wouldn't rank him above Williams. Anyway, Jennings gets extra points for being really great, even if it was for just a short while.
11. Mike Griffin. Good defense and .76 Pennants added puts him above
12. Mike Tiernan. better offensively than Griffin, worse defensively. WS likes Tiernan, warp3 Griffin. The space between Griffin and Tiernan is very very small.
13. Ned Williamson. Grade A defense at 3rd base and .71 pennants added put him on my ballot, but they don't put him any higher.
14. Cupid Childs. Didn't hit like Richardson, didn't field like McPhee. I really can't see any reason to put him up any higher.
15. Pete Browning. Hit very well, but a mere half a pennant doesn't impress me.

Off the ballot:

16. Dummy Hoy I really would have liked to put him on my ballot, but I've got plenty of outfielders, and he wasn't as good as any of them.
unranked. Jim McCormick and Jim Whitney. I have a hard time figuring out how to rank 19th century pitchers, and I can't say with any amount of certainty that these two belong on over anybody already up there. However, their value is so close, that if one was to make it, the other would too. The next best pitcher, after these two, is Mickey Welch.

Tonight, I rest, for tomorrow, I attack!

So I checked my email today. And, in the bulk mail folder, there were about a dozen different strange emails, each with a 100kb attachment, all with subjects like "Re: That movie" or "My details" or something like that.

So I immidiately opened every attachment, as soon as could click. I think they might have done something cool to my computer. Actually, I didn't. Because I'm not that stupid. Anyway, the way I understand it, the Sobig.F worm infecfs a computer, looks for all possible e-mail addresses on that computer, and then e-mails itself to those e-mail addresses it finds.

Which means that there are 13 or so people out there with my e-mail on their computer, none of which I have ever heard of before. I wonder how they all got my e-mail. Which brings me to my next point.

I get about 2 hits a day. I would love it if you were to e-mail me. My address is garyl_2000@yahoo.com . Or IM me, my AIM screenname is garylogn. Or whatever, because I simply love to hear from my adoring public. So please, let me know who you are, and if possible, what you think of me/my site.

So goodnight to everyone!! See you all later.

I hate the San Fransico Giants. They're probably my second least favorite team (behind the Yankees).

And of all the Giants, I think I dislike the Bondses the most. Not really sure why, I just never liked them. Don't like Barry, don't like Bobby.

But I nearly cried when I heard about Bobby Bonds. 57 is just way too young. Anyway, I don't have much else to say, so I'm going to go to bed. Night, all, and Rest in Peace, Bobby.

Work early tomorrow. I'm always worried about being up in time for work, so I should get to bed real soon.

But anyway, the sox won tonight, which is awesome. And my knowledge of baseball history is growing exponentially, and soon I will know more than anyone else in the world.

For the past week or so, I've been visiting my brother in California. Its been fun.

Notable things included meeting my brother's friend's family, seeing lots of fish, and sea lions, riding fast rides, getting lots of sunburn.

Perhaps I shall have lots of photos and the like up soon. But not now, I have little motiviation. I think I'm just gonna crawl in bed, and sleep. Ahh, the sweet embrace of sleep.

Night all!

Well, I finally did it. I, Garrett Logan, have a girlfriend. Well, not actually me, but a fictional character of the same name has one.

Anyway, where the hell is the rest of that story? Its like one page long, and it leaves us hanging in the middle of a scene. Gaahh!!! Even in cheap romantic fiction, I can't get any action. Oh well, until till next time, stay cool, and shoot straigt.

My optimism tank is gettling empty. I think it needs to be refilled real soon. I'm at a crossroads or sorts. The future is coming at me. Fast. And I'm sitting here looking backwards, at the many things that I haven't yet done. Look at all those things I should have done, all those people I could have been. I keep telling myself that there is no use doing that, that I should only look forward. But I wanna be a kid forever. So much that I'm supposed to do as a kid. And, it seems that I haven't done any of it. Oh well. There's nothing I can do, except look to the future. Look, look, look. Here's to tomorrow. See ya

I've been spending all my time plugging in numbers, adding up, subtracting, etc etc, to figure out who the greatest baseball player was, who retired 1901 or earlier, and hasn't already been enshrined in the Hall of Merit. I'm thinking its Billy Hamilton.

I got wet today!

Monday, August 04, 2003

time for bed. I've had a long (albeit profitable) day. Anyway, hopefully I'll have tons of fun tomorrow. If I don't, then I'll cry. Sniff, sniff.

Anyway, I had an idea for a musical today during work. It would be about an alien who has come to earth to destroy us all. Anyway, at some point during the production, we would have a bunch of cages, filled with both monkeys and children dressed as monkeys. At some point, somebody would yell "RELEASE THE MONKEYS!!!" and they would all run out, hopefully into the audience, where they would bite and otherwise terrorize the audience.

Tomorrow's gonna be a great day at work. I'have got a one hour shift. 6:30-7:30. So easy. I don't get why they would ever give somebody a one hour shift. Especially when we are so short, like we will be tomorrow. It would make much more sense to me, to give me a 6:30 am to 7:30 pm shift tommorrow, because... OH SHOOT!!!!! Ummm, I've got to get to bed, see you all monday, if I live.

I've spent a lot of time at www.baseballprimer.com, at the hall of merit. I think I'm gonna start participating soon. Maybe as soon as next election. Anyway, thats what I've spent all my time doing, so I thought you might want to know about it.
