Today, I was watching a little bit of TV. And, there was a commercial for something. And it was the worst commercial that I have ever seen. Not annoying like a Bernie and Phyll's commercial. Or so many other commercials I've seen. It wasn't bad in that it annoyed you or angered you or really did anything to you. But in actually advertising the product, it failed completely. Let me describe it to you.
John Madden and Dale Jarrett are standing in the Australian Outback, making small talk. Then, Madden asks Jarrett what game they will be playing, to which Jarrett replies "boomerangs." They both get a boomarang, and then throw it. Then, they go sit down, and talk about something else. Then there is the actual ad for something, outback steakhouse, I think. Then, it shows the two of them eating and the boomerangs land at their feet.
There are times, for instance at sporting events when you know something is going to happen. Like, when Adam Vinetari kicked the game tying field goal in the famous Oakland New England snowbowl, you had that feeling that New England was going to go on to win the superbowl. There is magic in the air sometimes, and you can tell that certain things are going to happen, not because you have reasons to believe them, but because you feel them to be true. As I was watching this commercial, I knew, as soon as it was over, that it was the worst commercial I had ever seen.
And so I spent most of the day thinking about it. And sometime later, it struck me why it was so bad. John Madden, and Dale Jarrett are talking, they throw boomerangs, and then go eat. Thats not a commercial. Thats a dream. Seriously, I could easily see myself lying on a couch, being told in a thick German accent that "zee figur of John Madden represents zee relationship you had vit your father, und zee boomerang shows how in zee end, you must deal vit your relationship to your father." Honestly, the thing played out as a dream. You had completely random characters, no theme, no plot, no nothing. It was just a bunch of completely random stuff that happened for no reason whatsoever.
Anyway, good night to everyone, and I wish you all well on your various finals and projects, as they approach.
